AthTek NetWalk supports both real-time and postmortem analysis. Do you know what are the differences? Most of time, real-time and postmortem analysis share the same template to analyze the traffic data. Real-time traffic analysis shows dynamic trends of the entire network, while postmortem traffic analysis shows exactly what has happened in this network. In this article, you will read the main differences between real-time traffic analysis and packet analysis in AthTek NetWalk. Continue reading →

[PDF] AthTek NetWalk supports both real-time and postmortem analysis. Do you know what the differences are? Most of time, real-time and postmortem analysis shares the same template to analyze the traffic data. Real-time traffic analysis shows dynamic trends of the entire network, while postmortem traffic analysis shows exactly what has happened in this network. In this article, you will read the main differences between real-time traffic analysis and packet analysis in AthTek NetWalk.

1. Overview.
In Overview section, real-time traffic shows current bandwidth usage and accumulated traffic data. But if you opened a captured packet in AthTek NetWalk, you will see fixed values of the network traffic and these values tell you exactly what has happened during the capturing period.

2. Packets.
When you opened a captured file in AthTek NetWalk, you will see a new tab named “Packets” created on left. Real-time traffic analysis doesn’t support Packets tab. In Packets tab, network administrators can read all the communication details including requested IP addresses, ports, protocol, etc. If a common packet analyzer enables network administrator to see a naked data, AthTek NetWalk enables users to see a reliable anatomical traffic data through detail and hex view tool.

3. Layered View.
There are 3 layers in Layered View section: Application, Net&Transport and Physical. A significant different is, you can see communication flows in postmortem packet analysis.

4. Events Tab.
In Events tab, network administrator can jump to the communication flow when it is a postmortem packet analysis.

5. Matrix Map.
In Matrix Map, real-time analysis only marks active connections in green, while postmortem analysis marks all successful connections in green.

In short, postmortem analysis enables network administrators to see all communication details happened on the network. All you need to do is to capture packets and open the captured file in AthTek NetWalk.

It monitors the real-time data traffic on the network, and leads them to the professional analyzer to generate network traffic analyzing charts. Multi-protocols enables you to know every detail about your network within different layers, including Application Layer, Transport Layer and Physical Layer. It is good at packet sniffing and enables to analyze the real-time packet by built-in Wireshark. All the captured traffic data can be saved as trace files for further use.

September 21, 2011, we participated in Giveawayoftheday with our AthTek Netwalk. It has been downloaded for many many times on that day, and we have received many imaginative suggestion through the comments and informer widget. For those who hadn’t participated in our hot discussion, you can look back to it from here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/athtek-netwalk-packet-monitor/#comments

Professional packet sniffing tool for administrators.

There are 120 comments listed on the page, and most of them are far-sighted and meaningful. Thank you so much for the comments and I have to say I had enjoy a wonderful 24 hours with you guys.

The discussion mainly concerns three aspects: former recommendations or certifications of AthTek NetWalk, grammar errors on its site page and the price setting. For the former recommendations or certifications, I’d like to invite you to read these two articles which are from famous software review site:

Software review from addictivetips.com
Software review from navigaweb.net

For the grammar errors, maybe it will take us a long time to locate and correct them all. We would be very appreciate if you can help us the translate all the text on the software pages. Actually I found that there were many features which we haven’t list on out website, but they had been mentioned in your comments, that is really really great! Maybe I can use some of them on our website for thanks to your contribution.

Finally, the price settings. We do have a free personal edition for home users. There are a few limitations but is definitely adequate to your home network monitoring purpose. AthTek NetWalk is more or less overkill for network novice, but can be used just as a network education tool for you to learn stuff of networking. Alternatively, you can free to try another networking tool of us, IP – MAC Scanner. This tool is developed for home user to monitor their small home network, including wireless network with DHCP addresses. It is more easier for use, and you can fast check all the connections to your network.

We have already finished to collect all the suggestions and ideas from GOTD. Some of them will be scheduled in the next version of AthTek NetWalk. I only want to say thanks to all you guys, and we will continuously improve our software and customer servious. If you want to start your business on AthTek NetWalk, we would love to assist you in your market place!

Network administrators can easily get the traffic details from diagrams. Built-in packet filter can help you a lot with intrusion detection, all protocols are supported. AthTek NetWalk V2.0 perfectly supports IPv6, and get an integration with Wireshark which enables a better packet sniffing performance in network monitoring.

In the new edition, AthTek NetWalk includes:

Integration of Wireshark

Wireshark is cross-platform, using the GTK+ widget toolkit to implement its user interface, and using pcap to capture packets; it runs on various Unix-like operating systems including Linux, Mac OS X, BSD, and Solaris, and on Microsoft Windows. AthTek NetWalk takes advantage of Wireshark, and achieves more better performance than Wireshark. The speed of opening a trace file with AthTek NetWalk is about 6 times up than Wireshark, and AthTek NetWalk supports super large trace file without crashes. Additional, AthTek NetWalk supports graphical traffic filters while the Wireshark only supports command line traffic filters.

Perfectly Support IPv6

IPv6 is a version of the Internet Protocol (IP) that is designed to succeed Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). The Internet operates by transferring data in small packets that are independently routed across networks as specified by an international communications protocol known as the Internet Protocol. Each data packet contains two numeric addresses that are the packet’s origin and destination devices. Since 1981, IPv4 has been the publicly used version of the Internet Protocol, and it is currently the foundation for most Internet communications. The growth of the Internet has mandated a need for more addresses than are possible with IPv4. IPv6 allows for vastly more addresses. AthTek NetWalk can perfectly performs as a network monitoring tool via protocols like IPv6.

More new features are waiting for you in the new AthTek NetWalk!

Although packet sniffing is not as popular as the use of Web logs, Web beacons and JavaScript tags, it is still one of the most sophisticated forms of data collection. A packet sniffer is a layer of software that installs on a network, and runs “on top” of the web server layer data. Otherwise, it can also be a physical piece of hardware you put in your data center, and all traffic is routed to web server through the packet sniffer solution.

One provider offering packet sniffing and web analytics solutions is AthTek NetWalk. Some sites, such as the SiteSpect use a interesting way to take advantage of packet sniffers, use the technology for multiple testing, eliminating dependence on the markup of a web page for testing.

One has to follow five steps to collect data through packet sniffing:
1. Client types your URL in a browser.
2. The request goes through a packet sniffer software or hardware which includes attributes of the application which can send back more data about the visitor packet sniffer.
3. Since then the request is routed to the web server by the packet sniffer.
4. The request passes through the analyzer package back to the client. Sniffer packet capture information on the last page and is stored. Some providers detector package label solutions include JavaScript code that can send back more data on the person visiting the packet sniffer.
5. The packet sniffer sends the page in the visitor’s browser.

The benefits of using packet sniffer and their mechanism of data collection are:
1. Since all data passes through the packet analyzer, first, eliminates the need to use JavaScript tags for your website, or in theory, to play your website at all.
2. The time to market is a bit longer than with JavaScript marked because it relies on IT to approve and install additional software and hardware in the data center. Although the time required is less than that required for other methods.
3. A large amount of data can be collected at the moment – far more than the labeling standard JavaScript. For example, server errors, bandwidth, all technical data and commercial information related to the page will be available. Packet detection provides the most complete data possible.
4. The nature of the solutions is such that it will be able to use only first part of “cookies.”

Packet sniffing has certain limitations, the data collectors should be aware of.
1. Most companies find it difficult to make a case and convince the IT department to add an additional layer of software on Web servers or the physical installation of hardware in their data centers, high-profile route all web traffic through these solutions. Sniffers also create a layer between the client and the website, which can pose problems and create obstacles.
2. Packet sniffing packet includes collecting raw traffic internet web server, which can pose two problems: (1) non-trivial amounts of work package configuration solutions detectors to filter only the data needed for all raw data. (2) The second challenge is about privacy. The raw data captures all data, including personally identifiable information such as passwords, names, addresses and credit card numbers. Privacy minutes required stress testing and legal review.
3. The detection solution packages still require JavaScript tags to collect all the data really needed for optimal analysis. For example, packet sniffers would not get the data cached pages (as no request is sent to the web server). The data files from Adobe Flash or Ajax may not be listed as well. In Rich Internet applications very interactive file on the visitor’s browser and then many interactions occur in the user’s browser that are invisible to traditional packet sniffers (again because not send multimedia interactions back request in server). The same goes for the main structure and the metadata about the pages through sheer application packet sniffer.
4. If someone has a lot of web servers or clients, he may be felt in many networks, packet sniffing can be expensive because the packet sniffing solution would have to be installed in the software or hardware on all networks.

Packet detection methods are highly specialized implementations. Currently AthTek NetWalk supports almost all network analysis of various LAN types. For best performance possible, JavaScript needs to be combined with markup. It is recommended that packet sniffers should be considered only if JavaScript web logs labeling or fall short of meeting the needs of an organization’s data.
