[PDF] AthTek NetWalk supports both real-time and postmortem analysis. Do you know what the differences are? Most of time, real-time and postmortem analysis shares the same template to analyze the traffic data. Real-time traffic analysis shows dynamic trends of the entire network, while postmortem traffic analysis shows exactly what has happened in this network. In this article, you will read the main differences between real-time traffic analysis and packet analysis in AthTek NetWalk.

1. Overview.
In Overview section, real-time traffic shows current bandwidth usage and accumulated traffic data. But if you opened a captured packet in AthTek NetWalk, you will see fixed values of the network traffic and these values tell you exactly what has happened during the capturing period.

2. Packets.
When you opened a captured file in AthTek NetWalk, you will see a new tab named “Packets” created on left. Real-time traffic analysis doesn’t support Packets tab. In Packets tab, network administrators can read all the communication details including requested IP addresses, ports, protocol, etc. If a common packet analyzer enables network administrator to see a naked data, AthTek NetWalk enables users to see a reliable anatomical traffic data through detail and hex view tool.

3. Layered View.
There are 3 layers in Layered View section: Application, Net&Transport and Physical. A significant different is, you can see communication flows in postmortem packet analysis.

4. Events Tab.
In Events tab, network administrator can jump to the communication flow when it is a postmortem packet analysis.

5. Matrix Map.
In Matrix Map, real-time analysis only marks active connections in green, while postmortem analysis marks all successful connections in green.

In short, postmortem analysis enables network administrators to see all communication details happened on the network. All you need to do is to capture packets and open the captured file in AthTek NetWalk.

[PDF] Network management applications play a major role in business. Especially for the MAC and IP scanner– it is the core part in a business network management application. More or less, we all know some good network management applications like AthTek NetWalk Enterprise Edition. But today we are not going to discuss any large software system for business. We want to discuss what is the best lightweight network management application (MAC and IP Scanner) for small business. What is the best MAC or IP Scanner in your opinion?

The best lightweight MAC and IP scanner application for small business should be safe in network scanning. Safe is the most important attribute of a network management system. The MAC scanner or IP scanner itself shouldn’t contain any suspicious program inside, and it must not invisibly upload the result to internet after scanning. If possible, the scanner should be in password protected. Usually, if the MAC or IP scanner can work without internet connections, it was safe for small business, still, you should always get in contact with the salesforce team to make sure you are doing the right thing for your business.

The best lightweight MAC and IP scanner application for small business should be cost-effective. It should be in a cheap price or even free for non-commercial use. Fortunately, there are some free MAC and IP scanners which you can use in a small company. But the features are quite limited comparing with the MAC and IP scanner shareware. For example, if there are more than 200 computers in your company. With a free MAC or IP scanner, you could hardly scan the entire intranet within minutes. Always the free MAC or IP scanner will crash when it reached 50 addresses or so. Actually, there are reliable MAC and IP scanners which cost only $21.

The best lightweight MAC and IP scanner application for small business should be capable but small. It should be able to find more than 100 IP or MAC addresses within 60 seconds, and make all the data backup safely. It should support both ARP and UDP scanning methods and custom scanning range. DHCP clients should be included into the scanning result. It shouldn’t take much space on your computer and the setup file should be in less than 10 MB. With these features, it could be a good lightweight network scanning application.

If you were asked: what is the best lightweight network scanning application for small business, you may have various answers like AthTek IP – MAC Scanner, Angry IP Scanner, Softperfect IP Scanner, Colasoft MAC Scanner or Advanced IP Scanner. Some of them are free. But if you consider all the features of the best lightweight network scanning application I have mentioned, you will find only one could be called “The Best Lightweight Network Scanning Application for Small Business”. AthTek IP – MAC Scanner doesn’t require internet connections to scan the network and backup the scanning results. As a business application, it only cost $21 for lifetime use. It has a small file size but can fast scan the network including DHCP clients. In one word, AthTek IP – MAC Scanner is the best lightweight network scanning application.

Why and how to bind IP with Mac?

DHCP assigns IP address to each device randomly. Therefore, as a network administrator, you need to avoid the IP address of the host from changing and result in unable to filter, manage bandwidth for the packets. Administrators must configure Bind IP to MAC to assure the management. Once the IP address and MAC address are bound for a computer, the router can obtain the specified IP address according to the rules in IP

Bind List after identifying MAC address of a computer. Thus, effective management and control can be reached in network easily.

So, how to bind IP to Mac?

If your firewall/router is also your DHCP serve and it allows you to reserve IP addresses based on MAC address, you will need to configure it to do so. The method varies by brand (Linksys/D-Link/Netgear/Cisco and a thousand others) so you may need to consult the web or the manual.

Now a small tool can figure it work which is called IP-MAC scanner.

You can download and install it from here free.

Firstly, open the software and click “scan” button.

Secondly, choose the IP addresses that you intend to bind with MAC and add them to the database.

Thirdly, change to the database tab and select the IP and MAC addresses.

At last, right-click and choose “generate IP-MAC binding” item.

Is it easy? See more-http://www.athtek.com/ip-mac-scanner.html

————–
We have just released new versions of AthTek NetWalk, with many new features included. You can now download AthTek NetWalk Free Trial Edition to try the new features yourself, and you will find AthTek NetWalk has greatly enhanced its packet analyzing functions for easily troubleshooting.

Download Free Home Edition V2.2.42

What’s new?
1. Support to capture up to 8G trace file.
In the previous versions, AthTek NetWalk can open up to 4GB packet files, but only capture 256MB packet files. With AthTek NetWalk v2.2.42, users are allowed to capture up to 8GB packet files in one time! This means even you leave AthTek NetWalk to capture packets for a long time, it still will be a single large complete trace file.

2. Enhance the event trigger.
